Authorities in Cyprus have begun nationwide inspections of civil defense shelters to assess their current condition and readiness in case they are needed during an emergency.
According to information reported by Kathimerini, officials will examine around 2,500 shelters located across the island. The review is intended to determine whether the facilities are functional and capable of accommodating the public if required. Authorities expect the inspection process to be completed within the next two to three days. If any shelters are found to be unsuitable, the information available to the public will be updated so residents can identify the closest operational shelter in their area, including through the SAFE CY mobile application.
At the same time, the government is introducing a new emergency notification system for mobile phones. Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou announced that the government has partnered with all telecommunications providers in Cyprus to enable the sending of SMS alerts that can quickly inform citizens about potential security threats or emergency situations.
The system, which became operational today (March 4), will allow authorities to deliver timely warnings and instructions from Civil Defence so that people can take appropriate safety measures if a risk is identified.
A nationwide test of the system is scheduled for around 7:00 p.m., when a test message will be sent to all mobile phone users in Cyprus. The government says the service can also target specific geographic areas, meaning alerts can be sent only to people located in a city or region where a threat exists.
Officials have also issued guidance on what citizens should do if they receive an emergency alert. People are advised to remain calm and follow Civil Defence instructions. If possible, they should move to a basement in their home, nearby building, or current location. If no basement is available, individuals indoors should stay inside the building and keep away from windows, glass, and doors.
Those outside are advised to enter the nearest building as quickly as possible. In public facilities such as schools, hospitals, and sports venues, staff will activate established safety procedures. Authorities are also asking the public not to drive to these locations during an emergency.
Until further directions are issued by authorities, citizens are urged to stay indoors or in basement areas and avoid moving through open spaces, whether on foot or by vehicle.
