Newsroom / CNA

To date a total of 4,388 new voters have been registered to vote for the June 9 elections, of which 1,386 concern Europeans residing in Cyprus for the forthcoming local administration elections. There were also 34 applications from Europeans for the European elections.

Speaking to CNA the Head of the Election Service, Menelaos Vassiliou, said the last day for registration in the electoral roll, as well as for the submission of statements for voting at polling stations abroad, is April 2, 2024.

He underlined that the peculiarity of the June 9 elections lies in the fact that for the first time there will be eight elections held simultaneously.

Elections will be held for European Parliament members, Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Municipal Councils, Community Leaders, members of Community Councils, Presidents of District administration organisations, and members of School Boards.

In the June 9 elections, all citizens of the Republic aged 18 years and over who reside in Cyprus, as well as citizens of other Member States of the European Union who reside in Cyprus and are registered in the relevant electoral rolls, have the right to vote.

Regarding the number of voters, there are special lists for Cypriots, Europeans and Turkish Cypriots.

"So far we have 569,086 registered voters, of whom 557,578 concern the permanent electoral list, namely Cypriots, which includes 735 Turkish Cypriots. We have the special electoral list of European citizens residing in Cyprus for local government, which numbers 12,945 and the special list of Europeans for the European elections which numbers 9,224. We have the special list for Turkish Cypriots residing in the occupied areas which currently numbers 82,925", he said.

It is estimated that around 1,850 polling stations will operate. Polling stations are expected to operate abroad, in Greece, England and Belgium.

On April 24 there will be the submission of candidacies for the European elections, on April 25 for municipal councils, Presidents of District administration organizations and members of School Boards and on April 29 for community councils.

The elections are set to cost €6,650,000. According to Vassiliou, the sorting of votes will take place at local polling stations.

As for the latest results, it is too early to make any assessment because they will be about the results of eight elections on the same night, he said.

However, the first results will be announced an hour to an hour and a half after polls close.
