Cyprus showcases business potential at Japan forum

Minister Papanastasiou leads delegation to highlight opportunities and collaborations

Cyprus Energy, Commerce, and Industry Minister George Papanastasiou showcased Cyprus as a prime international business hub during the Cyprus-Japan Business Forum in Tokyo. Co-organized by the Ministry of Energy, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Republic of Cyprus Trade Centre in Tokyo, the event drew over 120 participants from Japan, including government officials, business leaders, and journalists. Papanastasiou highlighted Cyprus' new strategy to attract global businesses and talent, emphasizing the Business Facilitation Unit's role as a contact point for companies seeking to operate or expand in Cyprus. He also underscored promising opportunities for collaboration in specific sectors and urged Japanese firms to leverage Cyprus for European access.

Demetris Skourides, Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology, discussed Cyprus' technology strategy and its evolving research and innovation ecosystem. He emphasized Cyprus' potential as a technology and innovation hub, stressing the importance of modernizing technological infrastructure, embracing artificial intelligence, and enhancing cybersecurity. Meanwhile, a representative from the Deputy Ministry of Shipping highlighted Cyprus' position as a leading ship registry and international shipping center.

The forum featured panels with Cypriot technology and shipping companies showcasing their expertise in biotechnology, space, maritime security, and ship management. These companies demonstrated Cyprus' advanced technological solutions and its unique offerings in penetrating the single market.

Addressing a question during the technology panel, Minister Papanastasiou outlined the Ministry's energy strategy, focusing on natural gas discoveries in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone and the electrical interconnection between Israel, Cyprus, and Crete. The forum provided a platform for fruitful discussions and potential collaborations between Cyprus and Japan in various sectors, fostering bilateral ties and mutual growth opportunities.
