Debt dispute ends in kidnapping

Two Syrian men found tied up in warehouse; financial feud suspected.

Newsroom

What began as a troubling tip from a concerned roommate led police to a chilling discovery in a warehouse in Ypsonas early Sunday morning: two men tied hand and foot, allegedly kidnapped over unpaid debts.

Police say a foreign national contacted the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) to report that two of his Syrian roommates had been abducted by a group of their compatriots. He also pointed fingers at a man he claimed was owed money by the victims.

Investigators tracked down the suspect, who reportedly gave conflicting statements when questioned. But their search didn't end there.

Acting quickly, officers discovered the two missing men bound in a warehouse in the Ypsonas area. The victims were rescued, and one was taken to Limassol General Hospital as a precaution.

In total, seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident. They are facing a slew of serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, kidnapping, extortion by threats, assault, and causing actual bodily harm.

Police say the case appears to revolve around a financial dispute within the group.

The investigation is ongoing, and arrest warrants for additional suspects may be issued.
