The political fallout continues after a woman filed a complaint accusing her partner, DISY Member of Parliament Nicos Sykas, of assault. Sykas has publicly denied the allegations and said he is ready to give a statement to authorities.

In a separate post, DISY party leader Annita Dimitriou announced that Sykas has been removed from the party’s candidate list for upcoming elections. She also called on him to voluntarily renounce his parliamentary immunity so that the investigation can proceed without any obstacles.

In her statement, Dimitriou said:

"As President of DISY, I want to make it absolutely clear that there is zero tolerance for any allegations of violence. We fully respect the rule of law and the presumption of innocence, but this investigation must proceed immediately and transparently. I consider it essential that the MP voluntarily give up his immunity. Meanwhile, he is removed from the candidate list, which is my recommendation to the party’s relevant bodies. Violence, especially against women, is incompatible with the values we stand for. Our principles are non-negotiable."

Sykas responded on social media, expressing shock that the allegation had been leaked to the press and online, saying it led to “trial by public opinion” before he had a chance to give his side. He said:

“I categorically deny the allegation and any insinuations made against me.”

“I am shocked that the complaint was leaked to the media and social networks and that public judgment took place before any testimony was heard.”

“I fully respect the investigative process and am ready at any time to provide the true facts.”

He also added that he reserves all his legal rights.

The case remains under investigation, with authorities considering the possible lifting of Sykas’ parliamentary immunity to allow a formal criminal process to proceed. Under Cyprus law, only the Supreme Court can authorize prosecution of a sitting MP, following a request from the Attorney General.
