Drug unit gets lucky after dialing number

Detained suspect’s phone number helps Larnaca police connect dots in two cannabis cases

A male suspect appears to be talking to the police following his arrest on drug related charges with reports saying investigators in Larnaca are connecting the dots in two different cases.

Police said a 41-year-old man was arrested Wednesday afternoon when drug-squad officers flagged down a suspected vehicle along the Larnaca-Dekelia road.

The incident took place around 6:35pm when the suspect and the 53-year-old driver of the vehicle were detained after officers found 7.5 kilos of cannabis during a car search.

An official report said the drugs, which were found inside the trunk of the car, included seven sealed nylon bags inside a cardboard box.

The package at the post office contained a phone number for the recipient, who ended up being none other than the 41-year-old suspect who had the phone in his possession

The driver later faced no charges and was released, while the 41-year-old suspect was questioned further.

During the investigation, police learned that a phone in the suspect’s possession was linked to another case under investigation, involving a 15-kilo hashish shipment at a Larnaca post office.

The package with the drugs at the post office also contained a phone number for the recipient, who ended up being none other than the 41-year-old suspect who also had the phone in his possession.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, the suspect admitted to police that he received the 7.5 kilos of cannabis from a courier office in Limassol through an associate in Greece.

The suspect had been told to deliver the cannabis to another individual who was supposed to be waiting along the Larnaca-Dekelia road.

Larnaca’s drug squad are investigating both cases while the suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday for a remand hearing.
