A routine EasyJet flight from Paphos to Bristol turned tense on Sunday night when the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Turkey after a smoke alert went off mid-flight.
Flight EZY2902, an Airbus A320 carrying passengers from Cyprus to the UK, had been in the air for just over an hour, cruising at 36,000 feet, when a smell of smoke was detected in the cabin. The pilot quickly changed course and headed for Izmir, where the plane touched down safely around midnight.
In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), an EasyJet spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying the emergency landing was made “due to a technical issue, which caused a smell of smoke in the cabin.” Emergency services were called in as a precaution, but no injuries were reported.
“All passengers disembarked normally at the terminal,” the airline said, adding that travelers were provided with hotel accommodation and meals while arrangements were made for the rest of their journey.
The passengers later boarded a different plane, flight EZY9902, to complete their trip to Bristol.
EasyJet apologized for the inconvenience, reassuring the public that “the safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority” and that the airline’s fleet is maintained to strict manufacturer standards.
