The European Commission on Thursday approved a €33.7 million package aimed at boosting the economy of the Turkish Cypriot community and advancing efforts toward reunification of Cyprus.

The funding, part of the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, will focus on improving trade across the Green Line, upgrading skills in the workforce, and strengthening social support systems.

Officials said a key objective is to bring more Turkish Cypriot goods in line with EU standards, with particular attention to dairy and agricultural products. Small businesses and startups will also receive backing to expand and compete more effectively.

The program will continue to fund scholarships for students to study at universities in EU countries. It also sets aside money for children with disabilities, vocational training, and support for teachers.

Environmental and energy initiatives are included in the plan, ranging from renewable power and efficiency projects to joint efforts in Nicosia aimed at improving living conditions and cross-community cooperation.

The Commission said it will maintain funding for cultural heritage restoration projects and for the Committee on Missing Persons, which works to identify and return remains of individuals who vanished during past conflicts.

Since the program was launched in 2006, the EU has committed roughly €760 million to the Turkish Cypriot community. Last year’s package totaled €39.5 million.

The Commission noted that its work also supports the recognition of Halloumi, or Hellim, as a product with protected designation of origin, following its registration in 2021. Technical assistance continues to help producers meet the necessary standards.
