A gas leak in Engomi on May 4 was likely caused by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders falling during a landslide near a construction site, authorities said Monday.
According to a statement from the Nicosia District Local Authority (EOA), the landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall and excavation work for an underground parking garage. The construction was reportedly carried out without the required building permit, in violation of local regulations.
EOA officials inspected the site following the incident. The authority said an application for a building permit had been submitted to Engomi Municipality on May 29, 2024, for a project involving four apartment buildings and underground parking.
The application was forwarded to the Fire Service for review, but as of Monday, the service had not returned its report, delaying further evaluation by the competent authority.
The EOA said it has issued a work suspension order and sent formal notices to both the property owner and the contractor, urging immediate steps to eliminate potential hazards.
The authority emphasized that public safety and compliance with the law are top priorities and said it remains in contact with all involved parties. Further legal action will be taken if necessary, it added.
