Former security guard accused of stealing Michael Schumacher's medical files

Two others arrested in alleged $12 million extortion plot

A former security guard for Michael Schumacher’s family has been arrested for allegedly stealing 1,500 medical files from the Schumacher home in Germany. The files include private information stored on two hard drives, which the family insists should not be made public.

Police detained the suspect, identified only as Markus F, 52, last Thursday. According to the German newspaper BILD, the stolen data comprises 1,000 images on one hard drive and 500 on the other, along with medication lists, videos, and other sensitive information.

Markus F, who had worked for the Schumacher family for five years, is accused of stealing the data in early 2021, reportedly intending to sell it for £12 million to settle personal debts. He previously worked in Egypt before returning to Germany, where he met other security guards, including Yilmaz T, 53, who is also implicated in the scheme.

Yilmaz T allegedly assisted Markus F in the extortion attempt but was promised only a small commission in the low single-digit millions. Yilmaz T was arrested alongside his son, Daniel L, 30, who has been released on conditional bail after his older brother Julian posted his £8,431 bail.

Senior public prosecutor Wolf-Tilman Baumert indicated that Daniel L may have acted more as an accomplice, based on advanced investigations.

The accused reportedly approached employees of Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, demanding millions to keep the medical information private. Schumacher, the seven-time Formula One world champion, has not been seen publicly for over ten years following a skiing accident in 2013 that left him in a medically induced coma after he struck his head against a rock at the French resort of Meribel.
