Friday, March 06 forecast: Sun starts the day, clouds take the afternoon shift

Morning brightness gives way to thicker clouds, with the odd shower or thunderstorm dropping by later.

Newsroom

A shy little high-pressure system is hovering over the area, doing just enough to be noticed but not enough to take full control.

Today will begin mostly clear, as if the sky woke up in a good mood. As the hours pass, clouds will start gathering like people arriving late to a meeting, gradually turning skies partly, and in some places mostly, cloudy. After midday, a few isolated showers may pop up, and there’s even a small chance of a solo thunderstorm making a brief dramatic appearance. Up on the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains, winter may try one more cameo with snow or sleet. Winds will blow southwesterly to northwesterly at 3-4 Beaufort, a steady breeze without any theatrics. The sea will be slightly rough, just enough to keep sailors alert. Temperatures will reach about 18°C inland and along the coast, while the higher mountains stay cooler at around 10°C.

Tonight, the sky tidies itself up and becomes mostly clear. Winds will shift northwesterly to northeasterly, staying light at 3 Beaufort. The sea settles into calm to slightly rough conditions, a fairly peaceful night for the water.

Weekend outlook

Saturday: Expect mostly cloudy skies with local showers or thunderstorms, mainly around the mountains, western areas, and the south. The higher mountains may again see snow or sleet, because altitude likes to keep things interesting.

Sunday: The atmosphere presses the reset button with mostly clear weather.

Monday: Clouds gather again over the mountains, possibly producing a bit of isolated rain.

Temperature trend: Temperatures will dip on Saturday, then begin a gentle climb from Sunday onward, settling back near normal seasonal levels, the weather’s version of getting back into a comfortable routine.
