Newsroom

A fire involving roughly two tons of garbage was reported in Limassol on Monday night after waste inside a municipal garbage truck caught fire during collection operations.

According to the Fire Service, the incident was reported at 9:28 p.m. The driver of the Municipality of Limassol garbage truck noticed flames coming from the load and emptied the waste at a safe roadside location before contacting authorities.

Two fire engines from the Agios Nikolaos Fire Station responded to the scene and managed to contain the blaze shortly before 10 p.m.

Firefighters later discovered battery packs buried within the garbage pile. The batteries were short-circuiting while crews worked to extinguish the fire.

A municipal emergency response officer also arrived at the location to coordinate the removal and handling of the burned materials.

Initial findings indicate the batteries inside the collected waste were the likely cause of the fire.
