State officials in Cyprus will soon be driving electric, as 31 EVs are being added to the government fleet. According to an article by Kathimerini's Dorita Yiannakou, the Department of Electromechanical Services is launching a new open tender for the purchase of seven additional fully electric vehicles for use by eligible officials.

Some officials have already started using electric vehicles. On June 10, the department received 24 Hyundai Ioniq 6 saloon EVs from CTC Automotive Ltd., which are now being distributed to government officials.

The first recipient of an electric vehicle was Energy Minister George Papanastasiou. The contract, awarded last year, allowed for phased deliveries; hence, he received the first car before the rest. Officials say giving the first EV to the energy minister sets a positive example within the government and reinforces its commitment to sustainable mobility and green transition goals.

The 24 Hyundai Ioniq 6 vehicles came with 24 chargers, which are being installed gradually at government buildings. A charger is scheduled to be installed at the Ministry of Justice this coming Monday, and all 24 will be in place by the end of the week, according to the Electromechanical Services.

The purchase of the 24 EVs was made through a public tender that drew bids from three companies. The contract, valued at €1.22 million, was awarded to the lowest bidder who met the technical requirements.

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades had proposed the tender to encourage electric mobility and promote the government’s green agenda.

According to current law, those eligible for exclusive use of a state vehicle include the President of the Republic, the Speaker of the House, the President of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General and Deputy AG, the Auditor General, all ministers and deputy ministers, the Government Spokesperson, the chiefs of police and the National Guard, the head of the Intelligence Service, and the spouse of the President.

Former presidents and speakers who served for at least 30 months are also entitled.
