Greek President: Cyprus cannot have any other solution but a federation

'A common national position'

Newsroom / CNA

There is a common national position that Cyprus cannot have any other solution but a federation, President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos has said.

Pavlopoulos who delivered the eulogy at the tenth memorial service of the late President of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos on Sunday, pointed out that a confederation cannot be the solution, because a confederated state cannot fulfil its obligations towards the EU for the implementation of the acquis communautaire. He also said that a main prerequisite is to have a solution that will provide for one international, legal personality and one citizenship.

We cannot speak of more or less patriots as all struggled for the interest of their country

He said that Greece stands united with Cyprus and supports the efforts of its President Nikos Anastasiades for a solution that will reunite the island.

Pavlopoulos referred extensively to the political achievements of late Tassos Papadopoulos, mainly Cyprus` accession to the EU in 2004 and the referendum of 2004 for the Annan Plan. He pointed out that back then, although some had a different approach than others, we cannot speak of more or less patriots as all struggled for the interest of their country.

He added that as long as Cyprus remains divided, we have a duty not to give up the struggle for reunification, pointing out that, in the past, the discords led to national tragedies that costed us a great deal. He added that Cyprus, is a reminder of such a national tragedy and we have a duty to work for the reunification.
