In a significant shake-up, Michael Damianos has assumed the role of Health Minister, succeeding Popi Kanaris, in a handover ceremony today. The transition comes amidst a backdrop of internal strife, notably between Kanaris and the Health Ministry's General Director, Christina Giannakis.
Kanaris' tenure was marked by notable achievements, including the full implementation of 26 out of 77 actions outlined by the President. However, her leadership was not without controversy. Kanaris initiated an investigation into the academic credentials of Director General Giannakis, which exacerbated tensions within the ministry.
During the ceremony, Giannakis acknowledged Kanaris' impactful yet tumultuous term, stating, "Your passage through the Ministry may have been brief, but you certainly left your mark." She went on to commend Kanaris for her dedication during challenging times, wishing her well in future endeavors.
Incoming Minister Damianos acknowledged the challenges ahead, emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring universal access to healthcare services. Damianos steps into his new role with a mandate to navigate the ministry through both its internal challenges and broader public health objectives.
