What started as a scenic hike in the hills of Palaichori turned into a Holy Thursday adventure two young people won’t forget any time soon.
Just after 5 p.m., the Fire Service got the call, two hikers had gotten stuck on a steep cliffside and couldn’t find their way down. It happened in a particularly rugged part of the area, the kind of place that offers postcard-worthy views… and more than a few risky spots if you're not careful.
“They were lucky. It could’ve ended differently,” said one rescue worker at the scene.
Crews from the Nicosia Fire Station and the EMAK rescue unit rushed to the scene, bringing along rescue vehicles, ropes, and even a telescopic boom truck, a massive crane-like machine designed for tough-to-reach spots. And this one definitely qualified: the hikers were stranded about 25 meters up, roughly the height of an eight-story building.
Firefighters quickly set up and worked together to bring the two safely back down to solid ground. Thankfully, neither of them was hurt, and no trip to the hospital was needed.
“They were lucky. It could’ve ended differently,” said one rescue worker at the scene.
Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis confirmed the operation went smoothly, and the hikers were brought to safety without complications. Still, he offered a gentle reminder: Cyprus’ mountains and trails are stunning, but they’re not to be underestimated.
“If you’re heading out for a hike, make sure you know the area, stick to the trails, and don’t take chances with steep or unfamiliar ground,” he said.
The hikers, though shaken, were relieved, and no doubt grateful, to be back on level ground. A little adrenaline, a big rescue, and a valuable lesson in outdoor safety: all in a day’s hike.
