The Israeli military said it is investigating whether Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza since 2017, was killed during its operations.
According to a report on Sky News, Sinwar, 62, has been part of Hamas since the early 1980s and is believed to have orchestrated the October 7 attacks.
He assumed leadership of the militant group after the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the former political leader, who was killed in Iran in July.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, "Three terrorists were eliminated during operations in Gaza." The statement added, "The IDF and ISA are checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed."
The military also noted that no signs of hostages were found in the building where the strike took place and emphasized the ongoing caution in their operations.
Images purportedly showing Sinwar's body have surfaced on social media, though they have not been independently verified.
