The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, is currently engaged in expanded talks with the visiting President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. This marks the historic first official visit by an Italian President to Cyprus. The visit holds significance in connection to the 20th anniversary of Cyprus's EU accession and the solemn remembrance of 50 years since the illegal invasion and ongoing occupation by Turkey.
President Mattarella's visit commenced with an official welcome at the Presidential Palace, where both national anthems were played, and respects were paid to the statue of Archbishop Makarios III, Cyprus's First President. The two leaders then engaged in private discussions before the expanded talks involving their respective delegations.
Later in the day, the Presidents are scheduled to visit Nicosia Town Hall and the old town along the Green Line. President Mattarella will also meet with the Italian community in Cyprus. The day will conclude with a formal dinner hosted by President Christodoulides and his wife in honor of the distinguished guest.
This visit not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also serves as a symbolic gesture during a crucial historical juncture for both nations.
