The long-anticipated expansion of Latchi Port, managed by the Cyprus Ports Authority, is once again gaining momentum. The project, considered a game-changer for Polis Chrysochous, promises to bring significant economic and social benefits to the region.
Renewed Push for Progress
According to Dorita Yiannakou in yesterday's 'Oikonomiki', the project had originally been estimated at €53.5 million, the budget has now been scaled down to €45 million to ensure its feasibility. Despite earlier delays tied to funding concerns, the government, alongside the Ports Authority, has prioritized this expansion, which is expected to enhance the area's appeal as a hub for tourism and coastal activity.
Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis will visit Polis Chrysochous on Friday to meet with local stakeholders and reaffirm the government’s commitment to the project. Discussions will also touch on the long-delayed construction of the Paphos–Polis Chrysochous road, which is now moving forward with revised tender documents. Both the port and road projects are expected to be completed around the same time, marking a significant milestone for the Paphos district.
Expansion Details
The project includes new breakwaters, berths, floating docks, and onshore infrastructure. It will add approximately 700 meters of piers, 360 meters of floating docks, and 160 boat berths to the existing facilities. Additionally, a 4,500-square-meter area will house boat repair and maintenance services, entertainment venues, restaurants, and office spaces.
Government agencies such as the Port and Maritime Police, Customs, and the Fisheries Department will also have dedicated facilities at the upgraded port. This development will not only triple the port’s basin size but also establish it as Cyprus’ first Green Port, utilizing renewable energy for wastewater management.
Timeline and Challenges
A consortium of consultants, including TRITON Consulting Engineers and I.A.CO Environmental & Water Consultants Ltd, is finalizing the project’s detailed study, expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once the design phase wraps up, tenders for construction will be launched, and the selected contractor will oversee the project’s marine and land infrastructure.
Construction is projected to take around 30 months, pending approval of the environmental study currently under review.
A Bright Future for Latchi
Located at the gateway to the Akamas peninsula, Latchi Port is already a popular spot for yachts and coastal cruises. This expansion is expected to solidify its reputation as a premier destination, driving tourism, creating jobs, and enhancing the region's overall development.
As Polis Chrysochous takes this bold step forward, local residents and visitors alike can look forward to a vibrant new chapter for the picturesque coastal town.
