A fire erupted late Saturday night at Machaira Metochi, alarming residents and prompting strong warnings from the Lythrodontas Community Council.
Olivia Christoforou, President of the Council, condemned the incident on social media, speaking of the dangers. “Lighting fires during the late-night hours by young people, under the pretext of an anniversary, is not a tradition, but a dangerous and unacceptable practice that puts human lives, property, and the natural environment at immediate risk.”
She emphasized the need for accountability, noting that such behavior should never be tolerated or ignored. Christoforou also addressed parents directly. “The care, guidance, and supervision of children is a collective responsibility. The respect for and safety of our community takes precedence over any reckless act.”
The images accompanying her post depict intense flames consuming materials in an open area, producing thick, choking smoke. She made a direct appeal to the community. “Let’s take care of our village. Do not pollute it with toxic substances burned from car tires or anything else. Let’s respect everyone’s property and lives, especially those living near the affected areas, as well as spaces that do NOT belong to us.”
Christoforou warned that such actions not only release toxic pollutants into the environment but also put nearby residents and their properties at risk. Local leaders are calling for accountability to prevent future incidents.
