Man arrested over assault on mobile camera operator

Attack sparks debate as frustrations over mobile traffic cameras boil over.

A 36-year-old man was arrested Sunday after allegedly assaulting a Brinks camera operator and causing damage to equipment, police said.

The incident happened on Sept. 17, when the suspect reportedly attacked the camera user during an afternoon shift. Police said that during a search of the man’s vehicle, officers discovered various burglary tools, which were confiscated as evidence.

The case is being handled by the Pera Chorio Police Station.

Mobile traffic cameras, operated by Brinks on behalf of the state, have sparked heated debate across Cyprus since their rollout. While officials say they are meant to improve road safety, many drivers complain the vans are placed in hard-to-spot locations or appear during emergencies, fueling frustration. In one widely criticized case, a camera van was reportedly stationed on a road where residents were fleeing wildfires.

Police emphasized that directing frustration at staff is unacceptable, noting that camera operators are simply doing their jobs. They added that such attacks put workers at risk and also undermine road safety efforts.

The 36-year-old remains in custody as investigators review possible charges of assault, malicious damage, and possession of burglary tools.
