In an effort to combat the growing problem of obstruction of mobile camera operators on roadways, the Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works, Alexis Vafeadis, has revealed a new bill that seeks to criminalize such behavior. Speaking on SIGMA's "Noon and Something" program, Vafeadis highlighted the dangers posed by individuals who obstruct camera operators, emphasizing that they put other drivers at risk.
The proposed bill, following a recent consultation, aims to make it illegal to obstruct the work of camera operators and proposes a significant increase in fines, raising them from €2,000 to €5,000. This legislative measure is expected to be put to a vote in Parliament, with the hope that it will serve as a deterrent against such obstructive actions.
Minister Vafeadis clarified that the intention behind the fines is not solely punitive but rather to function as tools to encourage compliance with road safety regulations. The bill reflects the government's commitment to promoting road safety and deterring behaviors that endanger both camera operators and the general public.
