A suspect of Azeri descent has been taken into custody in Cyprus on suspicion of terrorism-related activity and espionage, police said Saturday.

The individual appeared before a district court, which ordered an eight-day detention while investigations continue. Authorities withheld further information, citing national security concerns.

Local media reported the man was arrested in the Zakaki area of Limassol. He is believed to have been conducting surveillance on military sites, including the British Royal Air Force base in Akrotiri and Cyprus’s Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos, according to reports.

Cyprus, situated near the Middle East, has recently served as a transit point amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran. Terror-related incidents on the island are rare.
