A military G3 rifle was recovered from shallow coastal waters near Xylofagou on Sunday afternoon, triggering an investigation involving several authorities.
The weapon, described as heavily rusted, was spotted by members of the public who alerted the Police of the British Bases at approximately 5:30 p.m. Officers responded to the location shortly after receiving the report and began examining the scene.
Efforts are now focused on establishing how the rifle ended up in the sea and where it originated. To assist with the inquiry, the British Bases Police are working alongside the Cyprus Police and the National Guard.
Officials have not yet released details regarding the age of the weapon or how long it may have been submerged. Investigators continue to gather evidence as examinations remain in progress.
