Kataklysmos skies and a splash of summer

Cyprus celebrates the Feast of the Holy Spirit beneath warm temperatures and mostly gentle seas.

It is June 1st. It is Monday. It is Kataklysmos.

That means one final day of seaside strolls, family gatherings, water games and squeezing every last drop from a three-day weekend before Tuesday politely reminds us that inboxes still exist.

The holiday itself is tied to water and renewal, while yesterday's Pentecost commemorated the descent of the Holy Spirit, a feast associated with wisdom, understanding and enlightenment. Today, beneath calm seas and warm early-summer skies, Cyprus celebrates the Feast of the Holy Spirit, with the coast once again becoming the island's natural gathering place.

The weather seems happy to cooperate.

A weak low-pressure system and a slightly unstable air mass remain nearby today, but conditions are generally favourable for those heading to the sea or village festivities. There will be periods of increased cloud from time to time, and around midday or early afternoon a few isolated showers or thunderstorms may develop over mountainous and inland areas. Most coastal celebrations, however, should enjoy long stretches of dry weather.

Winds will begin light and variable before settling into a gentle southwesterly to northwesterly breeze later in the day. The sea will remain calm to slightly rough, fitting for a holiday whose very name is linked to water.

Temperatures will rise to around 32°C inland, near 28°C along the southern and eastern coasts, around 26°C on western and northern shores and about 22°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight, skies will become mostly clear once again, although patches of low cloud may drift through some areas. By early tomorrow morning, a little mist or fog may form locally, adding a soft start to the first full workday of June.

The good news for anyone already missing the long weekend is that the weather looks set to settle down. From Tuesday through Thursday, weak high pressure is expected to take over, bringing mainly clear skies with only occasional cloud.

Temperatures will remain close to seasonal averages, making for a gentle start to June, a month that arrives carrying the promise of summer holidays, longer evenings and the comforting illusion that there is still plenty of time before the heat really arrives.
