A senior official at the Nicosia Water Board is under scrutiny following allegations of sexual harassment in multiple incidents. The Board, in response to complaints from three staff members, convened urgently to address the issue.
During the meeting chaired by Maria Stylianou-Lottides, the Board discussed implementing recommendations from the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights. The Commissioner's investigation revealed procedural irregularities and failures in addressing sexual harassment complaints.
According to the Commissioner, the investigation highlighted instances of non-physical sexual harassment, both verbal and non-verbal, leading to gender discrimination in the workplace. Despite having a Prevention and Management of Sexual Harassment Code in place since November 2022, the Board allegedly failed to prevent such incidents.
In light of the findings, the Commissioner recommended disciplinary action and the establishment of an Equality Committee to address gender discrimination. The Board has appointed an investigating officer to handle the disciplinary proceedings. Discussions are underway to implement measures aimed at preventing sexual harassment and promoting equality in the workplace.
