Paphos hoteliers face mixed bag of occupancy rates in June

Mixed occupancy rates in Paphos highlight turbulent June in Cyprus tourism landscape

Newsroom

The hotel industry in Paphos province experienced a varied start to June, gradually improving as the month progressed, according to Euripides Loizides, President of the Paphos Hoteliers Association.

Loizides reported to CYPE that June is expected to close slightly behind last year in terms of occupancy rates, ranging between 65% to 85%. Looking ahead to 2024, he anticipates a slight decline in tourist arrivals to Cyprus, which will likely impact hotel occupancy rates in Paphos province. He expressed concern over external factors influencing tourism, remarking that "statements from our neighbors do not help at all."

Lower occupancy rates, Loizides attributed to several factors including leakages to occupied territories, stays in illegal accommodations, and shorter tourist stays aimed at reducing holiday costs.

Reflecting on Paphos' tourism performance since the beginning of the year, Loizides noted a challenging January, slightly worse than the previous year. However, from mid-February to March's end marked the best period ever recorded. "Tourist numbers may have been modest, but traffic levels improved significantly," he remarked optimistically, highlighting the potential for year-round tourism in Paphos.

April saw a slight decline compared to last year, followed by a tough May with decreased occupancy rates.

Regarding the recent three-day flood event, Loizides acknowledged Paphos' impact, noting a surge in Cypriot guests occupying local hotels, leading to overcrowding in many establishments.

The Paphos Hoteliers Association continues to monitor tourism trends closely, striving to navigate challenges and capitalize on opportunities for the industry's recovery and growth.
