Cyprus’s defense modernization strategy is centered on upgrading the National Guard’s anti-missile and air defense systems while expanding its use of drones, Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas said Wednesday. He also confirmed that Nicosia’s partnership with Israel includes a military component.
Speaking on the podcast Tsuroullis Uncensored, Palmas said Cyprus must strengthen its air defenses to meet modern security challenges.
“We are obligated to maintain anti-missile and anti-aircraft capabilities that protect our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. “We also need to adapt to the realities of today’s battlefield, where drones, both offensive and defensive, have become a decisive factor.”
Addressing criticism of the government’s defense buildup, Palmas defended the initiative as essential for maintaining peace and national security.
“Peace is guaranteed only through strength,” he said. “If some are uncomfortable with what they call ‘militarization,’ perhaps their protest should be directed toward the continued presence of Turkish occupation forces, not toward efforts to defend our country.”
Military cooperation with Israel
Palmas also acknowledged that Cyprus’s cooperation with Israel extends beyond diplomatic and humanitarian issues.
“Yes, our relationship with Israel has a military dimension,” he said. “We hold joint exercises and also procure defense systems from them. While there may be differing opinions, the humanitarian aspect is separate from the legitimate political and security interests of the Republic of Cyprus. Our objective is to safeguard our existence as a sovereign state.”
