In a move that caught Ankara off guard, Cyprus quietly renewed its military arsenal, unveiling two squadrons of Serbian-designed Tamnava rocket launchers during the island’s recent Independence Day celebrations. The public appearance marked the first time the systems have been shown, though sources indicate Nicosia plans to expand the order with another six launchers.
The Tamnava is a mobile multiple rocket launcher system (MLRS), named after a river in western Serbia and originally designed for both the Serbian Armed Forces and export markets. Its modular design allows it to fire different types of rockets and be mounted on various transport vehicles, giving operators significant flexibility.
Cyprus’ Tamnavas are mounted on Kamaz 6560 8×8 truck chassis, allowing rapid movement on roads and operational fields. They can fire 122 mm rockets up to 40 kilometers, or the larger 267 mm rockets with a range of up to 70 kilometers. Each launcher’s load can be adapted for the mission: the 122 mm version carries 24 rockets, while the 267 mm version carries six more powerful rockets.
Military experts say the acquisition strengthens the National Guard’s medium-range mass-firing capabilities, enabling rapid, concentrated coverage of selected targets and operational flexibility that is key in dynamic conflict scenarios.
The launchers’ appearance at the Independence Day parade signals that the systems are intended for active operational planning, not just storage. Observers note that this upgrade, alongside other recently acquired air defense systems, reflects Cyprus’ efforts to maintain regional deterrence and adjust its capabilities to broader geopolitical developments in the eastern Mediterranean.
By emphasizing mobility, adaptability, and range, Cyprus appears focused on enhancing its strategic options and operational readiness. Defense analysts say the integration of the Tamnava into the National Guard highlights the country’s determination to strengthen its defensive posture in a complex regional environment.
