A local man was killed in a road accident in Limassol district on Saturday when his vehicle crashed into a tree, with police calling on anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.

According to local media, 50-year-old Chrysis Sofroniou from Pachna was driving home Saturday evening around 10:15pm along the Kantou-Omodos road in Limassol district when his vehicle veered off the road near a right turn.

As a result of the collision, the tree was cut in half while the vehicle went over a ditch and ended up in an adjacent empty field

Police did not specify the exact location of the incident but said Sofroniou’s vehicle veered off the road and initially slammed into a cypress tree under circumstances still pending investigation.

As a result of the collision, the tree was cut in half while the vehicle went over a ditch and ended up in an adjacent empty field.

Fire fighters who rushed to the scene managed to pull Sofroniou from the wrecked vehicle, while an ambulance transported him to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

It was not specified whether other vehicles were thought to have been involved in the incident but traffic police made a public plea for any information.

“Anyone who may have knowledge regarding the incident in question is asked to contact Limassol traffic police or their nearest local station,” an official statement said.
