Police and customs officials in Larnaca have confiscated thousands of items believed to be counterfeit.

Over five and a half thousand items from various stores consisting of clothing, bags, sunglasses and hats were found to be imitations of high end brands.

A written statement from the Communications office of the Police Headquarters said that the operation was carried out yesterday by members of the Anti-Theft and Illegal Betting branch of the Cybercrime Sub-directorate in coordination with officials from the Larnaca-Famagusta Department of Customs.

The operation amassed a total of 5,393 items from 2 separate souvenir shops in Protaras and Ayia Napa, and 262 pieces of clothing and footwear from a clothing store in Protaras. All items were believed to be counterfeit.

Customs officials had previously inspected various stores in the area. Suspicions had been raised when several of the products being sold were deemed reproductions of branded items.
