The health ministry announced two new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, when a sum of 1,067 samples were checked for the virus.

The two positive cases emerged from a pool of 172 samples taken from individuals at the suggestion of their GP and in the framework of checks on special health groups.

The two cases involved a pregnant woman who was tested prior to childbirth, and another person who was tested prior to surgery.

A sum of 370 people who took the initiative to get tested for the virus received a negative test result, as did 113 arriving passengers and repatriated persons. Additionally, more than 200 employees who returned to work as lockdown measures were gradually lifted, and 28 contacts of other known cases, all tested negative for the virus.

The new cases raised the total number of coronavirus cases confirmed in the Republic since early March to 990. Of these, over 820 have recovered, while 19 have so far died of their coronavirus infection.
