We will probably receive on Friday the first concrete information that we have requested as regards the sanctions imposed to persons and legal entities in Cyprus, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides has told CNA, adding that Cyprus is in contact with the USA and the UK on a daily basis about this issue "with a view to having all the information before us, so that the competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus will do what they have to do."
Moreover, the President assured that "we will continue until the end" and "we will not allow anything that will create problems to the profile of our country, to the conditions acknowledged as regards our country, especially during the last years."
Asked about the next steps which the Republic of Cyprus will take after the sanctions imposed by the US and the UK on persons and legal entities in Cyprus, the President said that "meetings are taking place every day on this issue, either by me, or by my aides, and these meetings will continue next week. At the same time, we are in contact with the US and with Britain."
"Probably today we will get the first information because we have asked for concrete information, as regards the decisions that have been taken, and I consider that the Republic of Cyprus must do, and that is what we are doing, everything possible so that there will be no negative impact on the country's profile," he added.
Asked if Cyprus is in contact with the USA and the UK, the President said that "we are in contact with both countries on a daily basis, in order to have all the information before us, so that the competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus will do what they need to do."
He assured us that "we will continue until the end. We will not allow anything that will create problems to the profile of our country, to the conditions acknowledged as regards our country, especially during the last years."
He noted that the profile of a country may be ruined in one day, something that affects the economy, and has multiple repercussions in other fields of everyday life.
"And through our actions, we want to safeguard that there will be no negative impact on the country's profile," he added.
The US Department of Treasury and the UK Foreign Office imposed last week sanctions on Cypriot individuals and legal entities in connection “with the Russian Federation’s unlawful and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, including facilitators of sanctions evasion.”
