Repeated fires raise concerns at Paphos minors' shelter

Community outrage over ongoing disturbances in Paphos facility

A fire erupted Sunday morning at a facility for unaccompanied minors located in an apartment complex in Paphos. According to a report on Sigmalive, the city’s deputy mayor, Angelos Onisiforou, spoke with reporters about the incident, emphasizing ongoing issues at the site.

Onisiforou noted that this marks the second fire reported at the facility, stating, “The problem has existed for some time. There is constant noise and disturbances affecting local residents. Complaints arise daily, and authorities must take responsibility. We will take drastic measures if necessary; residents are ready to take to the streets.”

He further expressed concern over the prolonged stay of the minors, suggesting they should have been moved on by now. “Authorities indicated the minors would remain here temporarily, but it seems they are now nearly 30 years old and likely have children of their own since being housed in this facility,” he said.

Regarding the cause of the fire, Onisiforou is awaiting reports from the fire department and police but speculated that it may have been set by the minors themselves, citing that similar incidents have occurred three times previously.
