The Russian Foreign Ministry today rejected the proposal made by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to demilitarize the area around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine which is under Russian control.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was seized by Russian military forces in March, days after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine to take part in what it calls a "special military operation". The station's facilities are close to the front line and have repeatedly come under fire in recent weeks, raising fears of a nuclear disaster.
