As temperatures climb and spring settles in, an all-too-familiar visitor is making a comeback across Cyprus...snakes.
Reports of sightings are already starting to trickle in, with removal specialists receiving their first calls of the season from concerned residents who’ve spotted vipers in their yards, gardens and even right outside their doors.
One such expert, Yannis Angelis, said this week marked the start of what is expected to be a busy period.
In a recent incident he shared online, a venomous snake was found hiding under a blue bin just outside a property, alarmingly close to the entrance of a home. Luckily, it was spotted in time before anyone got hurt.
Angelis demonstrated just how dangerous these encounters can be. Using special forceps, he handled the snake, and when it struck, venom was visibly released, highlighting the very real risk these reptiles pose.
And this is just the beginning.
According to experts, the next one to two months are considered peak danger season, as snakes are at their most venomous following the winter period. A bite during this time can be particularly serious.
For many in Cyprus, especially those living near fields or undeveloped land, these encounters are more than just unsettling; they’re a seasonal reality.
Experts are urging the public to take simple precautions: clear overgrown grass, remove piles of wood or debris, and generally keep outdoor spaces tidy to avoid creating hiding spots.
