Young soldier dies, another teen injured after motorcycle crashes into utility pole in late night accident

A young man was killed and another injured in a late night accident over the weekend, after their motorcycle struck a utility pole in western Nicosia.

Police said 19-year-old Nicholas Constantinou from Nicosia and another male aged 19 were riding a motorcycle Sunday night around 11pm, when they got involved into an accident in Strovolos.

It was not clear who was driving the motorbike but police told Knews the two teens were riding along Iosif Hadjiiosif Avenue, heading northbound towards Perikleous Street when they suddenly veered off the road.

After the motorcycle went over the pavement, it crashed into a utility pole killing Constantinou instantly and injuring the other teenager, who was rushed to the Emergency Room at Nicosia General Hospital where he was treated for broken bones in various parts of his body.

Police did not disclose further information about the incident while the circumstances of the accident were still pending an investigation.

Doctors described the injured teen’s condition as critical.

Constantinou was a conscript who was drafted to carry out his mandatory military service at the National Guard’s Lakatamia AFB, a staging-post for aircraft operating in the wider Nicosia area.

A night curfew is in effect through the month of April starting from 11pm through 5am daily, in a government effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic,

Nicosia traffic police are investigating the incident.
