Spring goes rogue as Cyprus gets a surprise soaking (video)

Hail, thunder and soggy sandals as sudden storms turn sunny strolls into wet sprints, Mother Nature clearly had other plans today!

Sudden downpours caught many across Cyprus off guard on Wednesday, as a yellow weather warning issued by the Meteorology Department kicked into full effect.

What started as a mostly clear morning quickly turned into dramatic scenes in several areas of the island. Videos shared by “Cyprus Weather Fans” captured torrential rain pounding rooftops, hailstones bouncing off roads, and water gushing down gutters. In the mountains, inland, and eastern regions in particular, storm clouds thickened by midday and unleashed intense showers and isolated thunderstorms.

One of the most affected areas was the Palaichori–Agros road, where hail made the surface dangerously slippery. Authorities urged drivers to slow down, keep a safe distance, and proceed with extreme caution.

The yellow warning remains in place until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, with conditions expected to ease gradually through the evening.

Earlier in the day, the weather seemed deceptively mild. Skies were mostly clear with some low cloud cover, especially along the coast. But as the day progressed, the calm gave way to gusty southwest to northwest winds and stormy skies. Wind speeds reached up to 5 Beaufort in exposed coastal areas, and the sea turned a little rough — especially along the southern and eastern shores.

Daytime temperatures hit 27°C inland, hovered around 26°C on the south and east coasts, and were a cooler 24°C on the west and north coasts. In the Troodos mountains, thermometers only reached 19°C.

The forecast for tonight calls for mostly clear skies, although western areas may still see some lingering low clouds. Winds will die down slightly but remain present on the coasts, while temperatures will drop to around 16°C across the interior and coastal regions and down to 9°C in the mountains.

Looking ahead, Thursday will bring clearer skies overall, though there could still be some isolated showers in mountainous regions during the afternoon. Friday and Saturday are expected to be mostly sunny, with Friday seeing high clouds and Saturday adding some medium ones into the mix. Temperatures will stay slightly below average until the weekend, when a warmer spell is expected to push the mercury just above seasonal norms.
