Blustery winds and dense dust from the Middle East wreaked havoc in Limassol on Wednesday, causing trees to topple onto vehicles and creating challenging conditions across the district.
The powerful gusts, which have been sweeping the island since the morning, caused several incidents of material damage, with no injuries reported. In some cases, trees were uprooted by the winds, crashing onto parked cars. A striking image shared by meteorologist Eric Kitas on the Kitasweather page shows a vehicle crushed under a fallen tree in Limassol. Another social media user posted a similar scene on the Kairophilos of Cyprus page, capturing the impact of the storm.
The turbulent weather followed an intense dust episode that had blanketed Limassol since Tuesday afternoon. According to the ERATOSTHENES Center of Excellence at the Cyprus University of Technology, dense dust particles from the Middle East were recorded by the EratosthenesCARO atmospheric remote sensing station. The dust was concentrated in the lower layers of the atmosphere, reaching ground level and causing reduced visibility and breathing difficulties across the city. However, observations showed that the dust cloud was gradually subsiding by Wednesday morning.
Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious as the unstable weather continues, advising people to secure outdoor objects and avoid unnecessary movements, especially in areas with trees or construction materials that could pose risks.
Despite the disruptions, no injuries have been reported, with emergency services on standby to respond to further incidents.
