Summer hunting season opens in Cyprus on August 23

Hunters urged to prioritise safety as temperatures remain high.

The summer hunting season in Cyprus will begin on Sunday, August 23, with the Cyprus Hunting Federation and Wildlife Conservation urging hunters to follow safety rules, comply with hunting regulations and take precautions because of the current heat and fire danger.

Hunters are being advised to identify their target with certainty before firing and to check what lies behind and around it. They should also maintain the required safety distances and take care around other hunters, landowners and people using rural areas.

Some species remain protected at the start of the season

The Federation has also called for proper care of hunting dogs, particularly by providing enough water and allowing them regular rest during outings.

Turtle dove and quail hunting will not be allowed on August 23 or August 30. Hunting for both species will begin on September 2.

Woodpigeon hunting, however, will be permitted from the opening day of the season on August 23.

The Federation is reminding hunters that correctly identifying the species before taking a shot is especially important during this period.

Game reporting is mandatory

All game taken must be recorded through the Artemis Cy application during every hunting season.

For turtle dove, quail and woodpigeon, hunters are required to enter each bird separately and immediately after it has been taken.

The Federation said these records provide data used to manage game populations and document hunting activity, making accurate and prompt reporting an important part of the hunting process.

Heat and wildfire precautions

High temperatures are another factor hunters will need to account for. The Federation recommends carrying enough water, limiting time spent in direct sunlight and avoiding physical exertion beyond personal limits.

Dogs should receive the same attention, with hunters ensuring they have sufficient water, shade or rest and appropriate protection from the heat.

The Federation is also warning hunters about the risk of fires during the dry summer period. Fires may not be lit in areas that have not been specifically designated for that purpose.

Hunting licence renewals

When renewing their hunting licences, hunters can select the hunting club they wish to join without paying an additional fee.

The Federation says this option provides support to organised hunting clubs and their local work relating to hunting, wildlife and rural areas.

Before heading out, hunters are advised to check which areas are open to hunting and consult the relevant maps through the Artemis Cy application.

The Federation said responsible conduct, knowledge of the regulations, safety and respect for people and the natural environment should guide every hunting outing.
