A 74-year-old tanker truck driver was killed Wednesday when his vehicle overturned on the Karvounas–Amiantos road, police said.
Sotiris Tringis, of Limassol, was driving the water tanker around 2:15 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to Limassol traffic police chief Marios Charalambous.
Charalambous said the tanker veered off the road while navigating a turn just before entering the village of Amiantos. The vehicle struck a concrete wall and a telecommunications pole before overturning.
Tringis was injured in the crash and had to be extricated by the Fire Service. He was taken to Kyperounta Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Charalambous said the driver had been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He added that investigators found skid marks at the scene and that the tanker would undergo a mechanical inspection.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
