Tap and pay, Cyprus police enter the card era

No cash? No problem. New payment terminals mean fines, fees, and paperwork can now be settled with a swipe, just not after hours.

If you’ve ever fumbled for exact change while paying a fine, renewing a firearm license, or visiting the Criminal Records Office, relief is finally at hand. The Cyprus police have started installing POS terminals across the island; yes, you can now pay with your card.

A total of 24 payment points have gone live, including Police Headquarters, the Traffic Police HQ, the Criminal Records Office, and other key departments. District offices in Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos, Famagusta, and Morphou are now fully wired for digital payments. Even the police stations in Polis Chrysochous and Kato Pyrgos are joining the 21st century.

The police stressed that payments will only be accepted during cashier hours, so don’t try to settle that midnight speeding ticket with a tap of your contactless card just yet.

Officials said the move is part of ongoing efforts to modernize services and make life easier for citizens. And yes, one can’t help but wonder: with fines now just a swipe away, will your next speeding ticket feel a little less painful… or just a little faster?

For those keeping score, Cyprus Police have finally caught up with a digital trend most of us switched to years ago. Better late than never, right?
