Police investigate illegal bird trapping in Larnaca

Four blackbirds recovered as police crack down on illegal and inhumane bird trapping in Cyprus.

Newsroom

Authorities in Larnaca are investigating an illegal bird-trapping case after a 35-year-old man was caught trying to remove wild birds from nets early Thursday morning.

Members of the Anti-Poaching Unit of the Tactical Police (MMAD) spotted the man near a field in Tochni, where two trapping nets had been set up along with a device emitting bird calls to lure the animals. The man was attempting to take the trapped birds from the nets for himself when officers intervened.

Police recovered four wild birds, believed to be blackbirds, and took the suspect to the local Zygi police station for further investigation.

Bird trapping is illegal in Cyprus and considered highly inhumane. Trapped birds can suffer injuries, extreme stress, or death, and authorities say such practices threaten local wildlife populations. Officials urge the public to report any suspicious activity and remind residents that those caught trapping or hunting birds illegally face serious penalties under Cypriot law.
