Famagusta traffic police investigate accident after helmetless teen collides with two vehicles

A teenager was rushed to the Emergency Room in critical condition on Saturday after the motorcycle scooter he was riding in Sotira collided consecutively with two vehicles with details still pending clarification.

Police say a 15-year-old boy was riding a motor scooter on Saturday afternoon along the Sotira-Liopetri road in Famagusta district, when he collided with a van driven by a 48-year-old male.

The incident took place around 3pm with local media reporting that an eastbound van driven by a Paralimni resident, described as a Bulgarian national, attempted to make a right turn into Sotira’s industrial area, blocking the path of the teenager who collided with the van and then crashed onto a second vehicle that was idling at a stop sign.

Police declined to confirm the exact positions of the two vehicles or whether the van attempted to make an illegal right turn

An ambulance rushed the teen to the Emergency Room at Famagusta General Hospital, where doctors said he suffered a skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds. Due to his critical condition, the boy was then transported to Nicosia General where he underwent emergency surgery and was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.

Police declined to confirm the exact positions of the two vehicles or whether the van attempted to make an illegal right turn, telling Knews on Sunday that the collision took place along the Liopetri-Sotira road and that the exact circumstances of the collision were still under investigation.

The teenager was not using a protective helmet at the time of the collision, police said, adding that the van driver was detained for questioning.

An official incident report later said the van driver was administered two Breathalyzer tests, with the final one indicating 106 micrograms, which is over the legal limit of 22 μg of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath.

No alcohol tests were administered for the teenager who was said to be on life support or the driver of the second vehicle.

Famagusta Traffic Police are investigating the incident.
