The heart of Cyprus is beating stronger as Nicosia’s mayor, Charalambos Prountzos, unveiled a series of exciting projects that promise to transform the city. From revitalized public spaces to improved infrastructure and vibrant cultural hubs, the capital is poised for a significant facelift in 2025.
A Festive Revival
Reflecting on the recent holiday season, Prountzos expressed pride in how “Nicosia came alive,” drawing nearly double the visitors compared to the previous year. Beautiful decorations, early planning, and a variety of family-friendly activities contributed to the success, he said. Events extended across neighborhoods, from tree-lightings in Egomi to festivities at Spyros Kyprianou Park.
"People respond when you offer them something worthwhile," Prountzos noted, adding that accessible spaces and inclusive events played a significant role in the festivities. Eleftheria Square saw a staggering 300% increase in foot traffic, showcasing the city’s potential when public spaces are activated.
Game-Changing Projects for 2025
The city is now shifting its focus to projects that will redefine its landscape:
- Old GSP Site Transformation: Scheduled for completion by early 2025, this iconic space will feature a park, underground parking, commercial areas, an open amphitheater, and a large public square integrated with the THOC building.
- Stasinou Avenue Promenade: The second phase of this pedestrian and cycling path, stretching from Paphos Gate to the Olympic Stadium, promises a scenic, family-friendly route.
- Inner Perimeter Pathway: Starting January 15, work begins on a similar path within Nicosia's historic walls.
- Trikoupis Street Revamp: By March, this essential street in the old city will be fully modernized.
- Famagusta Avenue Upgrade: A long-awaited project connecting Sopaz to Aglantzia will finally be realized, offering smoother travel and revitalized urban spaces.
Housing, Employment, and Education
Looking beyond infrastructure, Nicosia is making strides in housing and community support:
- Student Residences: Two dormitories—one on Voulgaroktonou Avenue and another on Aristidou Avenue—will open, providing affordable housing for students.
- Employment Centre for Children with Disabilities: The Sxiakidou House in Agios Dometios will create opportunities for young people with disabilities, fulfilling a longstanding need for their families.
- Faneromeni School of Architecture: Plans for a new school, tendered by the Archdiocese, will progress this year, turning the historic Faneromeni area into an educational hub.
A Vision of Connectivity and Growth
Mayor Prountzos emphasized that these projects aren’t just about improving aesthetics—they’re about fostering community connections and making Nicosia more inclusive and accessible. "We are building a city for everyone," he said, underlining the importance of long-term planning to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
As Nicosia evolves, it’s clear the capital is embracing its role as a vibrant, modern city while preserving its historic charm.
