President Donald Trump has nominated John Breslow, an Arizona businessman and longtime Republican donor, as the next U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus. But even if his nomination sails through, don’t expect him knocking on the embassy door any time soon.
Breslow would be embarking on his first tour of diplomatic service, marking a dramatic shift from business and political fundraising into foreign affairs. Trump’s decision appears to reward a loyal supporter: Breslow donated heavily to GOP causes, including backing Trump’s own campaigns, and has served as a key financial benefactor to the party.
Before he can officially take up the post, Breslow must be vetted and approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. If the committee gives the green light, his nomination goes to the full Senate for final confirmation.
Another wrinkle: the current U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Davis, is expected to depart around March 2026. Even if Breslow is confirmed earlier, he may have to wait until her term ends. To complicate matters further, Davis is also serving as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in Ukraine, a role she began earlier this year. With tensions and U.S. involvement high in Ukraine, there’s speculation she might be asked to extend her service there, possibly delaying her return to Cyprus.
