Two Greek Cypriots have been detained by Turkish Cypriot "authorities" after allegedly entering a restricted military area in the northern occupied side of Cyprus, according to Turkish Cypriot media reports.
The incident reportedly took place on Sunday, July 12, with the two Greek Cypriots facing allegations of entering the area without completing the required crossing procedures and violating a military restricted zone.
Following questioning, the two are expected to appear before a so-called “court” in the occupied areas, according to the reports.
The case has drawn attention because crossings between the government-controlled and occupied areas have become part of everyday life for many Cypriots. Thousands of people cross regularly for work, family visits, shopping, and other activities, but restrictions remain in place around military zones and certain areas due to the island’s continued division.
Authorities in the Republic of Cyprus have been informed of the incident and are monitoring developments.
The case also serves as a reminder that, despite increased movement across the island since crossing points opened in 2003, the legal and security framework surrounding the buffer zone and military areas remains complex and sensitive. Further details are expected following the proceedings.
