UK denies involvement of Cyprus bases in Israeli strikes on Iran

London rejects Russian claims of British role in Israeli operation as “disinformation”.

The United Kingdom has firmly denied allegations that its sovereign bases in Cyprus were used to support recent Israeli airstrikes on Iran, calling the claims “nonsense” and “deeply irresponsible.”

Speaking during an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council, U.K. Ambassador Barbara Woodward rejected Russian assertions that British facilities on the island played any role in the military operation. “Let me say clearly and categorically that Russia’s claims are nonsense,” she said, condemning Moscow for spreading disinformation “at a time like this.”

Woodward emphasized that the U.K. was not involved in the strikes and reiterated London’s concern over rising tensions in the Middle East. “We are deeply concerned by Israel’s attacks on Iran and the military response that followed,” she said. “There is a clear risk of escalation, with serious consequences for regional and global security.”

Calling for restraint from all parties, Woodward stressed the importance of diplomacy. She said the U.K. had engaged in high-level talks with both Israel and Iran, urging de-escalation.

The ambassador also reaffirmed the U.K.’s commitment to a diplomatic resolution regarding Iran’s nuclear activities, in coordination with European allies. “This is a time for a strong, united stance from Council members,” she said. “We must take urgent steps to de-escalate tensions and allow diplomacy a chance.”

Russia’s U.N. envoy, Vasily Nebenzya, had earlier cited unverified reports suggesting cooperation between Israel and British intelligence, claiming Israeli aircraft were offered refuge at U.K. bases following the strikes,  a charge London flatly denied.
