UK deploys second naval ship to the Eastern Mediterranean

Floating base and warship sent to region to support forces and prepare civilian evacuations.

Britain is stepping up its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean, preparing to send a second Royal Navy vessel to the region as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise and concerns grow over the safety of British nationals abroad.

British media report that the ship being deployed is RFA Lyme Bay, a support vessel designed to operate as a floating logistics hub and emergency medical platform. The UK Ministry of Defence said the ship is already being readied for potential missions, including helping evacuate civilians if the security situation worsens.

The RFA Lyme Bay is an amphibious support ship measuring about 176 meters in length. It can carry troops, military vehicles, helicopters and large quantities of equipment while also serving as a base for medical operations thanks to onboard mobile treatment facilities.

Officials say the vessel’s main role will be to provide logistical and medical support to British forces operating in the area, while boosting the UK’s ability to carry out emergency evacuations from conflict zones if needed.

At the same time, Britain is also deploying the warship HMS Dragon to the Mediterranean. Defence Secretary John Healey announced that the destroyer is expected to depart from Portsmouth in the coming days as part of the broader military buildup.
