Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has welcomed the appointment of a UNSG personal envoy on Cyprus saying that she looks forward to working with the envoy.
In a post on the platform 'X' she wrote that she welcomes "Secretary General's appointment of María Angela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his Personal Envoy on Cyprus".
She adds that "I look forward to working with the Envoy, our partners, and allies to advance Cypriot-led, UN-facilitated efforts to secure outcomes that benefit all Cypriots".
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
Welcome Secretary General @antonioguterres’ appointment of María Angela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his Personal Envoy on Cyprus.
